Final A1 Poster Design

My final layout and design for my Photograph a Day A1 Poster

After trying at least half a dozen different layouts, I decided to revert back to my original idea of a 5x5 grid. I initially tried to lay my photos out in the order that they had been taken but they looked really awkward and out of balance so I decided to place them in a more random fashion and I was really pleased with how they look.

Photograhph A Day. Week 4

Disaster !

My intention for this week was to shoot a series of dynamic wildlife shots in and around four wildlife spots in my local area.

Due to the severe weather, this has been impossible and I found myself yesterday with no images for week four ! This was not good.

On returning home from University, my Mum showed me an article in yesterday's Metro newspaper and this blew my mind and gave me immediate inspiration.

I did some quick research on the internet and found a website from the artist who is named Pery Burge. http://www.chronoscapes.co.uk/

Her work is absolutely amazing and I decided to see if it was possible to replicate this style of dynaimc image.

So I found a set of acrylic paints (red, yellow and blue) and mixed them with water on a pallette.

I also used some food colouring (red, green and blue) and I also found some old blue fountain-pen ink.

I initially experimented with these inks and colours in a shallow bowl of water but the colours mixed together straight away.

I then tried the same shallow bowl with oil but this did not work either.

I then tried the same shallow bowl with full-fat milk and this strangely proved to be the perfect medium !

Here are some of the images that I created.

For week 3. I had shot a series of images of water dripping into a bowl. My intention was to show the various stages of the drip and also to use different coloured backgrounds and different colourings in the water to give more variation to the shots.

Although the shots are ok, I plan to re-shoot them this weekend now that I have a better understanding of how this shot works. I have also borrowed a pair of 1000w halogen lights from University and these powerful lights have helped me attain a much higher shutter speed and deeper depth - of - field which should result in much sharper images.

Images will be posted up on completion later this weekend.

Layout.

Following our second In Design session on Wednesday, I am now a lot more comfortable in the use of this programme as I had never seen In Design up until last week.

I have experimented with several page layouts. 2 of which can be seen below.

When I was initially set this brief, I had decided to layout my images as a 5 x 5 grid with the 3 remaining images across the bottom as seen above. When I actually set up this layout using In Design, I realised that this layout does not work as the images look too small and it also looks unbalanced.

I tried a different layout of 4x7 yesterday afternoon as seen above and I much prefer this layout.
It  has a greater balance and the images are bigger so the viewer will be able to see more detail. It also fills the page much better.

I have also decreased the font-size as I found that it was very over-powering in the first layout and detracted the viewers attention from the images. I feel that the font-size in the above layout is much better.

I had also used an incorrect font in the first layout.

I had used Helvetica Neue Light which should have been Helvetica Neue Ultra-Light as used above.

Research ideas and test-shots for week 2 of my Photograph-A-Day assignment.

DYNAMIC

I have spent hours this afternoon trawling through Getty Images in the hope of finding some inspiration for my photograph-a-day assignment.

One of my ideas for this assignment has been to photograph traffic at night using a long-exposure to create light-trails.

I like the shape of the lines in this shot.
This image gave me the initial idea for tonight's shoot.

In our 1st RBS presentation, Sophie had the clever idea of altering her focal-length mid-exposure to gain a very artistic effect.
This image reminded me of that technique and I wanted to apply it to a traffic shot as seen below.

RESEARCH

Dictionary definition of the word ''dynamic'' from The New Collins Concise English Dictionary.
Of or concerned with energy or forces that produce motion, as opposed to static. of or concerned with dynamics. Dynamical, characterised by the force of personality, ambition, energy etc.

Other words for dynamic from The Collins Thesaurus.
Active, driving, electric, energetic, forceful, go-ahead, go-getting. (Informal) High-powered, lively, magnetic, powerful, vigorous, vital, zippy.

I gained this unusual effect by both slowly and quickly altering the focal-length whilst the shutter was open.

I did this by adjusting in both short increments and also by constantly altering the focal-length to give a more blurred effect.

I prefer the method of adjusting in small increments, starting with the lens at it's widest focal-length then gradually increasing the focal-length to full-zoom and then back to wide-angle all within a 30 second exposure.

I think that the composition of these images could definitely be improved but I am happy for my first attempt at this technique. Particularly considering that it was freezing cold outside and I couldn't feel my fingers for most of the shoot !

Thursday

As it was raining tonight, I decided to experiment at home with this new technique.
Here is 1 image that I produced.

Colour Studies Assignment 2. The Interpretation of Colour Within a Landscape.

Summer.

For the second part of my colour studies assignment, myself and the rest of my group have been assigned the season of summer and tasked to capture an image that defines this season in a single shot.

My initial idea shown below was to go to the beach on a nice sunny day and try to capture an image with a blue sky and bright sunshine reminiscent of a summers day.

As we are now coming towards the end of October, this would not be an easy task. I have been watching the weather forecast all weekend and knew that today could be a good day to try this idea as the weather was supposed to be clear and bright with excellent visibility all day.

So I packed my photography kit this morning and drove 126 miles to the seaside village of Rhosneigr in Anglesey which I know very well from my childhood holidays there.

Below are some of the images that I captured today.
