Colour Studies Assignment 2. The Interpretation of Colour Within a Landscape.

Summer.

For the second part of my colour studies assignment, myself and the rest of my group have been assigned the season of summer and tasked to capture an image that defines this season in a single shot.

My initial idea shown below was to go to the beach on a nice sunny day and try to capture an image with a blue sky and bright sunshine reminiscent of a summers day.

As we are now coming towards the end of October, this would not be an easy task. I have been watching the weather forecast all weekend and knew that today could be a good day to try this idea as the weather was supposed to be clear and bright with excellent visibility all day.

So I packed my photography kit this morning and drove 126 miles to the seaside village of Rhosneigr in Anglesey which I know very well from my childhood holidays there.

Below are some of the images that I captured today.

RBS Final Images-Part 2

As part of my research into the industrial history of Manchester. I visited Deansgate Locks.

In terms of Manchester's industrial heritage, this is a very important site.

In the late sixteenth century (late 1700's), Francis Egerton The 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, a local businessman who who ran many mills was faced with an ever increasing demand for coal to fuel his mills.

He comissioned the Bridgewater Canal in Manchester which was the first of it's type in the country with a famous engineer of the time called James Brindley.

This pioneered the revolution in coal transport  to industry and thus played a key role in the start of the Industrial Revolution.

It was my intention to photograph the old industrial side of Manchester and the work of James Brindley around Deansgate Locks and to incorporate the largest and most modern building in Manchester, The Beetham Tower into the same image.

This wheel is a surviving relic from the start of the industrial revolution. It was part of a water-wheel system that was used to lift coal from the canal to the factories.
My intention with this image was to frame the largest and most modern piece of engineering in Manchester(The Beetham Tower) with one of the oldest surviving relics from the industrial revolution.

A sunny day at Deansgate Locks.

I woke up this morning to a blazing blue sky, stunning !

I decided to get up early and go into Uni to borrow a D90 and a couple of lenses for the day with the intention of further exploring Deansgate Locks and I had only seen a small bit last night and that was in the dark.

The weather was perfect.

I did a circular walk round the Locks and ended up right back where I had started which was very convenient.

I then rushed back to Uni for my afternoon lecture and then after some concrete mixing in the studio, (this is not a technical photography term) I went back to the locks to capture what looked like a very promising sunset. It didn't materialise but still got a few good shots anyway.

Here is a small selection from today's shoot.

Equipment used:-

  • Nikon D90
  • 17-70mm f2.8
  • 18-105mm f4.5
  • Sandisk 4gb SD card.
